I wrote this in the very early hours of Christmas Day 2020. I wrote it for someone who has always been and still is, very special to me❤️

T’was starry and cold, that Christmas Eve night
When the Highwayman woke, from his slumbers with a fright
Although grumpy and tired, he knew something wasn’t right
For streaming through the window was the brightest star light

Pulling on his coat, he ran to the car
He turned up the heater, snow was threatening from afar
He drove on through the darkness, still mindful of the star
For its mystical presence, was quite simply bizarre

But he had a job, the roads to patrol
Keeping Kith and Kin safe, when disaster took its toll
Catastrophe, or breakdown, or just another hole
Flashing lights through the darkness, means he’s taking control

As snow started falling, just after 12
He spied in a camera, very agitated Elves
For loose in the carriageway were reindeer with bells
They needed his help, on this, the strangest of Noel’s

The location was vague, ‘Just follow the star.’
‘This is crazy,’ he thought. ‘I’ll never find where they are. ‘
‘How can it help me, this star shining bright from afar?’
But of course, there it was, the glitter trail in the tar

Ending, close by, utter chaos he found
For there in the starlight, presents scattered all around
Stood the Elves & the reindeer & Santa with a frown
Looking bewildered and lost, their sleigh upside down

He set to work quickly, pulling with ropes
And with everyone helping, he did skillfully coax
That sleigh to stand upright, restoring all children’s hopes
For Christmas Eve night, is not the time to get the mopes

The Elves cheered, as he waved them out of sight
Once again flying high, on that most wondrous night
Whilst the highwayman silently, stared at the light
That now minute, by minute, wasn’t shining so bright

The once brilliant snow, now drizzling rain
In the distance the rumble, of the fast midnight train
Not believing his eyes, he really couldn’t explain
Why it was just after 12 & all peaceful again

Returning home in the cold light of dawn
He stared out of the window, trying to stifle a yawn
Had it all just been a dream, on that Christmas Day Morn
Glitter in the hallway, said it wasn’t quite the norm…..
